Searching for their first conference opening victory in four seasons, the Fordham Rams had three players reach double figures in scoring, compared to two for the Hawks, but it was Saint Joseph's, who snuck away with a 62-57 win at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia, Pa.
With the loss, Fordham moves to 6-10 overall, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 7-8 overall, 1-0 in the league.
The Hawks got out of the gate with the early 11-6 advantage, behind six points from Ashley Logue. The Rams then put together an 8-2 run, capped by a Tiffany Stokes jumper, giving Fordham their first lead of the game at 14-13.
The Rams continued to lead the game until the Hawks posted back-to-back three-pointers by Ashley Prim and Katie Kuester to sneak back ahead, 21-19, with 3:15 left in the half. The Hawks eventually took a 26-22 lead into halftime, as Brittany Ford connected for a late lay-up for Saint Joseph's.
Neither side distinguished themselves on the offensive end, as both teams shot below 40 % with the teams combining for 16 turnovers. Saint Joseph's Ashley Logue led all scorers at the break with eight points, while Fordham was paced by Charlotte Stoddart with seven points and five rebounds.
The Hawks extended their lead at the start of the second half to six, 38-32, behind six points from Dominique Bryant. Fordham stayed right with the Hawks behind six straight points from Randall Hurst, getting the Rams within four, 42-38.
Ford then took over the scoring duties for Saint Joseph's, netting 11 straight points, to give the Hawks a 55-50 edge.
Fordham continued to claw at the Hawks, as Becky Peters hit a three-pointer to keep Fordham within four, 61-57, but the Rams could not get any closer, eventually falling by five.
For the Rams, Hurst scored a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds, while Peters added 12 points and three assists. Stoddart added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in her first start at Fordham with Kristina Bell chipping in six points and eight rebounds.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, January 13th, when they wrap up a four-game road swing at Temple University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
