The Fordham volleyball team did virtually everything possible to come away with wins against Boston College and St. John's on Saturday at the St. John's Classic. Despite thwarting numerous set and match points, as well as taking sets beyond 25 points, the Rams came up on the short end, falling to B.C. in five sets and St. John's in four.
In their first match of the day, the Rams (2-4) took on Boston College (5-1) for the second straight week with a better performance, but still fell to the Eagles in five sets. Final set scores were 31-29, 22-25, 25-21, 14-25, and 15-13.
Set one was a seesaw affair, seeing 13 tie scores, with the final one at 29-29. Boston College then got a kill by Jordan Meredith and a block by Mollie Kolosky and Kristen Baader to close out the opening game.
Fordham came right back to tie the match at one set apiece with three-point win in set two. Behind 22-21, Fordham scored the final four points of the set for the win, taking advantage of two Eagle errors and getting kills from Sara Friede and Kailee May.
The Eagles rebounded for a 25-21 third set win to regain the edge in the match, but Fordham quickly killed that momentum in set four with a 25-14 win to force a deciding game. The Rams hit .435 in that fourth set, led by four kills by Katie Wells, as well as three aces by Katherine Burrell.
In the fifth set, Fordham grabbed an opening 4-2 lead following a kill by May, with Boston College responding with four consecutive points to grab a 6-4 edge. Fordham fought right back to tie the set seven times, the last on a kill by Jenna Hart to make the score, 13-13. The Eagles though got a kill by Taylor Williams and an attack error by Fordham giving Boston College the win.
For Fordham, Wells led the attack with a team-high 17 kills and four blocks, while May had her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 21 digs to go with three blocks. Burrell finished with six kills, 47 assists, and eight digs with Hart and Christi Griffiths recording 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
In match two against St. John's, the margin was even closer, as the final three sets were all decided by extra points. The Red Storm (3-3) though would come out on top by scores of 25-20, 27-25, 24-26, and 33-31.
The Rams struggled to start, hitting .057 in the first set, but rebounded in the second to get set point at 24-23 after three straight kills by Friede. St. John's though would tie the score at 25, and then got a Fordham error and a kill by Kun Song to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Fordham continued to battle in the third set, as the Rams fought three straight match points to tie the score at 24. May then connected for a kill, followed a St. John's error, giving Fordham the set win.
In set four, Fordham kept fighting right with the Red Storm, as there were 17 tie scores in the game. The Rams fought off four more match points, tying the set at 28 on a kill by Jolanda Gunning-Snowden. Fordham then had a pair of set points after two kills by Friede, but both were foiled by the Red Storm, leaving the score tied at 31. St. John's then got a kill from Darlene Ramdin and a block on a Friede attack, giving St. John's the match, three sets to one.
For Fordham, Friede set career-highs with 19 kills and 20 digs, while May had her second double-double of the day with 12 kills and 18 digs. Wells also chipped in 11 kills and a career-high seven blocks with Megan Arend having 15 digs.
The Rams will now have their home opener on Wednesday, September 9th, as they host Iona College in the Rose Hill Gym, beginning at 7:00 PM. It is the first of five straight home matches for Fordham, as the Rams will host the 9th Annual Rose Hill Classic on September 11-12.
