The Rams welcomed back setter Katherine Burrell to the starting line-up, hoping her return would spark a strong start to Atlantic 10 play on Friday against Duquesne. The Dukes' Liz Homan however had other ideas, connecting for 16 kills and seven blocks to lead Duquesne past Fordham at the Rose Hill Gym, 3-1. Final set scores were 27-25, 25-19, 23-25, and 25-23.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 8-8 on the season, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne improves to 10-5 overall, 1-0 in league play.
The first set saw 15 tie scores as well as eight lead changes, with Fordham getting the first set point of the match at 24-23. After a kill by Duquesne, Fordham's Christi Griffiths knocked down a kill for another set point, but Nicole Wright responded with a kill, tying the score at 25. Duquesne then picked up a kill by Jessica Artman and a block by Ashley Buse to close out the set, 27-25.
In set two, Duquesne led for most of the set with Fordham closing to within one, 19-18, following a Dukes' service error. Duquesne then rallied for six of the next seven points, highlighted by two Wright kills to win the set, 25-19.
Set three was another tight one, as the score was tied at 23 all. The Rams then came up with kills by Katie Wells and Sara Friede to post a 25-23 win and force a fourth set.
In set four, Duquesne led by three late, 20-17, before Fordham went on a 6-2 run, capped by a Friede kill, taking a 23-22 lead. The Dukes however rattled off three straight kills, two of which by Artman, to close out the match, 25-23.
For Fordham, Wells led the way with 18 kills and four blocks, while Griffiths had 12 kills and three blocks. Friede added 15 kills and five digs with Jolanda Gunning-Snowden having 11 kills and five digs. Katherine Burrell dished out 50 assists in her return to go with nine digs and four kills. Defensively, Megan Arend recorded a career-high 26 digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, September 26th, when they host 23rd-ranked Saint Louis University, beginning at 2:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
