Looking for a fresh start to conference play, the Fordham women's soccer team opened their Atlantic 10 season in style with a 3-0 victory over the Richmond Spiders at Ukrop Park in Richmond, Va. It was the first Fordham win in four tries at Richmond.
With the win, Fordham improves to 2-7-1 overall, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond falls to 4-5-1 overall, 0-1 in the league.
Fordham got the jump on the Spiders early, as Michelle Ancelj netted her first goal of the season in the ninth minute off an assist from Danielle Ingram, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.
The score stayed that way until the 57th minute, where the Rams continued their offensive attack. This time, Annie Worden crossed the ball to Mariella Romano, who netted her first goal of the season, making it a 2-0 game.
The Rams then iced the game in the 65th minute, as Katie McDermott headed home a Lauren Nowakowski pass for her first goal of the season and a 3-0 win.
Fordham goalkeeper Jen Byer was solid in net, making five saves for her second shutout of the season and the tenth of her career. The Rams finished the game with a 20-16 shot advantage over the Spiders.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 27th, when they host the Charlotte 49ers at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 1:00 PM.
