Princeton, N.J. -
Despite a gritty effort, the Fordham water polo team came up just short in their fifth place match-up against Bucknell University at the ECAC Championship on Sunday. With the score tied at six at the half, Bucknell netted seven goals in the second half to edge Fordham, 13-11.
Fordham is now 6-6 on the season, and finish in sixth place at the ECAC Championship.
"The team had a strong showing this weekend," said head coach Bill Harris. "Five games in three days is a lot of water polo and the team continued to improve every game. All of the athletes contributed with especially strong work on the defensive end of the pool."
Fordham was led by Mikey Edwards, who finished with four goals, while Victor Bautista Medina and Ryan Hultman each had two. Jakob Muller, Ali Arat, and Scott Nemecek rounded out the Ram scorers.
"Our two meter players Arat, Edwards and Shrewsbury gave us a presence on offense and kept the up their goal production against the top teams at the tournament," said Harris.
In net, Nemecek and Edwards split the duties, as Fordham was without Christian Flessner, due to illness. Nemecek finished with three saves and two steals in net.
The Fordham water polo team returns to action on Saturday, September 26th, as they host Connecticut College in their home opener at the Messmore Aquatic Center, beginning at 8:00 PM.
