Volleyball Wraps up Play at Titan Classic

Fullerton, Calif. - The Fordham volleyball team wrapped up play at the Embassy Suites Titan Classic in Fullerton, California on Saturday. The Rams opened the day with a loss to seventh-ranked UCLA, while also falling to host Cal State Fullerton in four sets.

With the losses, Fordham returns back east with an 8-7 record to begin Atlantic 10 play next weekend.

In their opening match, #7 UCLA swept a three-set match from Fordham was scores of 25-12, 25-14, and 27-25.

After taking the first two sets, the Bruins got a solid battle from Fordham in the third set, which features 12 ties and five lead changes. With the score tied at 21, Fordham picked up two points on a Bruin error and a Christi Griffiths kill to lead 23-21. After a sideout point to UCLA, Griffiths connected for another kill to give Fordham two set points. UCLA's Stephanie Nucci however came up with a kill and a block to tie the set at 24. Despite Fordham's best effort, the Bruins picked up match point on a Sara Sage block to win the set, 27-25.

For Fordham, Katie Wells led the Rams with nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage, while Griffiths had five kills and a block. Kailee May added five kills and seven digs with Megan Arend having 14 digs defensively.

In the second match, the Rams fell to Cal State Fullerton in four sets, 25-16, 25-17, 20-25, and 25-19.

After falling behind by two sets, Fordham came together for a solid third set. With the score tied at 11, Fordham went on an 8-2 run, capped by a block from Griffiths and Jolanda Gunning-Snowden, to go up by a 19-13 score. The Titans fought back within three points at 23-20, but the Rams got kills from Wells and Gunning-Snowden to win set three, 25-20.

The Rams tried to keep the momentum going in the fourth set, as they tied the score at 11 all. The Titans then pulled out an 8-2 run off their own, which the Rams could not recover from, falling by a six-point score.

For the Rams, Wells had 10 kills and two blocks, as she was selected to the All-Tournament team, while May also had 10 kills and nine digs. Kim Capicotto dished out 35 assists to go with eight digs with Sara Friede having eight kills and 13 digs.

The Fordham volleyball team now returns home on Friday, September 25th, as they open Atlantic 10 play against Duquesne University, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
