Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham men's soccer team could not find the back of the net in their 2009 season opener against Hartwick College as a header in the middle of the first half gave the Hawks a 1-0 win over the Rams.

Hartwick had a number of chances early in the first half with three corner kicks in the first five and half minutes of play, though the steady Fordham defense prevailed and did not let any attempts reach the goal.

It was in the 21st minute that Hartwick's Torres Garcia ripped a shot that Michael Cunningham managed to get a head on to put the ball past Fordham keeper Ryan Meara for the lone goal of the game.

The Rams put the pressure on the Hawks in the remainder in the half with sophomore John Niyonsaba's strike from 20 yards out and sophomore Tim Richardson's header from a Niyonsaba cross came within minutes of each other only for the shots to respectively sail high and wide right.

The second half was a back and fourth battle between the Rams and the Hawks with neither team able to capitalize on any opportunities. Hartwick goalie Jeremy Vuolo grabbed three saves in the game while each team recorded six shots.

Fordham hits the road for their next three games starting with a match at Adelphi on Saturday, September 5th at 6:30 PM.
