Easton, Pa. - The Fordham men's soccer team continues to struggle as their second game at the 2009 Lafayette College Classic ended just the same as the first, though this time they managed to put a goal on the scoreboard in their 3-1 loss to Villanova.
Villanova put the Rams in the hole early with a goal by Adam Amann in the fifth minute of play to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Kyle McCarthy gave Villanova a comfortable two goal advantage.
The game looked as though it was going into the half with the Wildcats leading Fordham 2-0, but in the closing minute of the first half, Ryan Meara's deep punt connected with sophomore Matt Courtenay downfield. Courtenay handled the pass and put it into the back of the net with 28 seconds on the clock to cut the Rams' deficit in half.
The Rams outshot the Wildcats 10-6 in the second half, but the only goal for either team came from the foot of Villanova's Will Ogden in the middle of the half to put the score at 3-1.
Fordham had a number of chances at the end of the half to catch the Wildcats, but both Courtenay and Veer Lakhan-Joseph's shots went high while a strike from Aaron Markowitz sailed wide. Meara ended the match with a season high six saves.
Sophomore Tim Richardson's competitive play in both games of the 2009 Lafayette College Classic earned him the lone Fordham selection on the All-Tournament Team.
The Rams will next face Marist College at Jack Coffey Field on Friday, September 18 at 7:00 PM
