Volleyball Posts Season Opening Win Over Seton Hall

Buffalo, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team kicked off their 2009 season in style with a three-set sweep of the Seton Hall Pirates at the University at Buffalo Invitational in Buffalo, N.Y. The win was the first for Fordham (1-0) over Seton Hall (0-1) since 2000, snapping an eight-match losing streak to the Pirates. Final set scores were 25-14, 25-13, and 25-23.

The Rams clicked on all offensive cylinders, hitting .319 for the match to go with six service aces. On defense, Fordham held Seton Hall to an .082 hitting percentage, while collecting six team blocks.

In set one with Fordham leading 7-6, the Rams reeled off seven straight points to take a 14-6 lead, highlighted by a pair of kills from Katherine Burrell. Fordham extended the lead to 11, 22-11, following a Seton Hall error, and would hold on to win the set by a 25-14 margin. Fordham's Kailee May and Christi Griffiths each had four kills in the set.

Megan Arend recorded seven digs and two aces against Seton Hall.


Set two was much of the same, as Fordham jumped out to a 9-3 lead, following a kill by Sara Friede. Fordham extended the lead to 18-8 after a five-point run on a pair of services aces by Megan Arend and three kills by May, eventually taking the second set by 12 points. The Rams hit .474 in the second set with May having four total kills.

Set three came down to the wire with the score tied at 23. Griffiths then came up with back-to-back kills for Fordham to close out the match, 25-23.

For Fordham, May posted a match-high 14 kills to go with seven digs, while Griffiths had ten kills, four blocks, and a pair of aces. Burrell finished with 38 assists with Katie Wells adding seven kills and two blocks.

The Rams will have two more matches at the University at Buffalo Invitational on Saturday, August 29th. Fordham will take on host Buffalo at 1:00 PM and then Boston College at 4:30 PM.
