Bronx, N.Y. - The skies threatened to make the Fordham men's soccer exhibition match against Iona College a wet and wild affair, but the two teams were able to squeak in 90 minutes of relatively dry play with Iona making the most of their one and only shot for a 1-0 win over the Rams.
Fordham had their chances in the first half with freshman Marcus Axelsson's header and a John Niyonsaba shot being snatched up by Iona's keeper Nils Bintock.
It was in the second half that Gaels registered their only shot and Fernando Liserra made sure it counted. His 20 yarder from the left side escaped the reach of Rams' goalie Ryan Meara and went into the upper right corner of the net to give the Gaels the 1-0 lead and eventual game-winning goal.
Fordham worked in two more shots in the match, but were unable to get one past Binstock who saved all four shots that came his way.
The Rams open up the 2009 season on Wednesday, September 2, as they host Hartwick College on Jack Coffey Field at 7:00 PM.
