Facing their first ranked opponent of the season, the Fordham women's soccer team was in for a challenge on Friday night against #23/22 Rutgers. With inclement weather in the tri-state region, it made playing conditions even more difficult, as the Scarlet Knights capitalized for a 3-0 victory over the Rams in New Brunswick, N.J.
With the win, Rutgers improved to 2-0 on the season, while Fordham fell to 0-2.
Rutgers had a number of scoring chances in the first half, outshooting Fordham 11-1 in the period. Fordham's Jen Byer made three saves, prior to Rutgers scoring the first goal of the game in the 34th minute, as Stefanee Pace netted her first goal of the season. Byer however would keep Fordham behind only one at the half, making a pair saves late in the period.
In the second half, Rutgers looked to increase their lead on a shot by Ashley Jones in the 55th minute, but the ball rang off the post, keeping the game at 1-0. Rutgers continued the offensive attack, scoring in the 61st and 71st minute on goals by Jenifer Anzivino and Merissa Smith, respectively, to go ahead by a 3-0 margin.
Fordham managed just three shots in the contest, one each by Leah Loguidice, Annie Worden, and Katherine Wah, compared 21 by Rutgers.
In net, Byer made a game-high six saves, while Rutgers' Erin Guthrie posted her second shutout of the season.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, August 30th, when they play at Army, beginning at 1:00 PM.
