Bronx, N.Y. - In its season opener this afternoon, the Fordham women's soccer looked poised to pull out their first win ever against Maryland when Brittany Hogan knotted the game at one in the second half. Unfortunately for Ram fans, Maryland's Jasmyne Spencer netted her second goal of the game just after Hogan tied the game to give the Terrapins (2-0-0) a 2-1 win over Fordham (0-1-0) on Jack Coffey Field.
Maryland controlled play in the early going, registering the first seven shots of the game. The first true scoring chance of the game came at the 16:42 mark when Maryland's Lydia Hastings rang a shot off the left post. Jasmyne Spencer then directed the rebound toward goal, but Fordham's Danielle Ingram made a defender save, clearing the ball out of the box.
Spencer eventually struck for the first goal of the game at 28:51, as Ashley Grove sent a pass through the middle, which Spencer collected and was able to beat Fordham netminder Jen Byer on the ground from 20 yards out.
Fordham then made its first charge at 31:52 when Kelsey Walker put a shot on net with Maryland keeper Mary Casey knocking the ball toward the top of the box. Fordham's Courtney Fedge then one-timed the rebound with Casey out of the net, but Maureen Dowling slid across for a defender save to keep Maryland ahead 1-0.
The Rams later tied the game at one at the 52:07 mark on a scoring connection from
Mary Hennessy to
Brittany Hogan. Hennessy crossed the ball from the left side to Hogan, who dribbled into the box, and beat Casey to the far post from ten yards out for her first goal of the season.
The score was tied briefly as Maryland connected for their second goal less than a minute later. Alone in front, Spencer took a feed from Grove, beating Byer for the go-ahead goal.
Fordham tried valiantly to get the tying mark and almost did at the 66:40 mark. Leah Loguidice was sent in off passes from Mariella Romano and Katie McDermott, but Casey was able to make the save to the top right corner to keep the score at 2-1.
The Terrapins out shot Fordham, 11-6 in the contest. In net, Mary Casey made four saves for Maryland, while Jen Byer made one save for the Rams.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, August 28th, when they play at Rutgers University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
