Softball Sweeps URI; Gives Bridget Orchard 400 Coaching Wins

Kingston, R.I. - The Fordham softball bats came alive for 11 hits, including home runs by Jocelyn Dearborn, Erin Fisher, and Samantha Pellechio, as Fordham completed a series sweep of the Rhode Island Rams, 11-2, at the URI Softball Field.

With the win, Fordham improves to 35-19 overall, 12-6 in Atlantic 10, while also giving head coach Bridget Orchard her 400th career coaching victory.

Fordham started the scoring with the long ball, as Jocelyn Dearborn connected for a solo home run to left center in the top of the second inning, her eighth of the season.

Fordham extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third with a pair of runs. Melissa Andrews opened with a single up the middle, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Kay Bright, but throw went wide, allowing the runners to go to second and third. After a pop out, Samantha Pellechio lined a single to center, scoring both runners.

Fordham made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth, as Erin Fisher connected for a solo home run to center, her fourth of the year.

Rhode Island cut the Fordham lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Melissa Wilson hit a solo home run to left center, while Stef Poedubicky had an RBI-double.

Fordham then regained their four-run lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up, 6-2. Pellechio got things going with Fordham's third home run of the afternoon, a solo shot to center, her team-leading tenth of the season. Fisher then walked, moved to third on a single by Meghan Shager, and scored on an RBI-single by Beckah Wiggins.

Fordham then capped the game with a five-run seventh inning to go ahead by an 11-2 count, highlighted by a two-run single by Pellechio.

Chelsea Plimpton (11-3) got the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Jen Mineau and Wiggins wrapped up the game with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. At the plate, Pellechio was 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI, while Andrews and Bright each had two hits and two runs scored.

The Rams will wrap up their regular season on Sunday, May 3rd, as they play an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at the University of Massachusetts, beginning at noon. The first game can be seen live on CBS College Sports Television.
