Bronx, N.Y. - It was a very special Mother's Day at Houlihan Park as the Fordham baseball team honored the 2009 senior class in the best way possible as they completed the three-game sweep over the University of Richmond with the help of a stellar defense that turned three inning-ending double plays in the 5-4 win.

The Rams struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and no one out, Ryan McCrann hit into a double play that brought in Danny Leach from third while Nick Martinez's second double in as many games scored Brian Kownacki.

Fordham extended their lead to 3-0 with another run in the third on Kownacki's single through the left side that plated Leach.

Brando Casalicchio did not surrender a hit until the fifth-inning when lead-off batter Matt Zink singled with a bunt between first base and the pitcher's mound. The Spiders would go on to score three runs in the inning to tie the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Rams brought the score to 4-3 when Richmond catcher Ryan Conway's throw, in attempt catch Martinez stealing second, went into center field and allowed McCrann, who was stealing third on the pitch, to score.

The Rams brought one more run home, in the bottom of the seventh, to extend their lead to 5-3. Leach put himself in scoring position with a single and his 26th stolen base of the year and scored on Bobby DiNardo's double down the right-field line.

That run would prove to be vital as Richmond brought in a run in the top of the ninth, but Chris Kaible settled down to get the final out and earn his third save of the year.

Jordan Grangard picks up his second win in 1.2 innings of relief work, surrendering only one hit. Zach Young takes the loss after throwing six complete innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, two walks while striking out four.

Leach led the Fordham offense for the second straight day, going 3-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Kownacki, DiNardo, Martinez and John Kahn also had multi-hit games.

The Rams will now gear up for their final non-conference game on Tuesday, May 12, as they host Sacred Heart University at 7:00 PM.
