Kingston, R.I. -
Needing to start off the final weekend of the regular season on the right foot, Fordham's Lindsey Kay Bright had her first career four-hit game, while Jen Mineau struck out nine, as Fordham topped Rhode Island, 2-1, at the URI Softball Field on Friday.
With the win, Fordham improves to 34-19 overall, 11-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island falls to 13-35 overall, 2-15 in the league.
Fordham got right out of the gate with a two-run first inning. Lindsey Kay Bright started the rally with a one-out infield single, and then stole second. Mary Beth Puccio then doubled to left center, scoring Bright. Puccio later advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a fielder's choice by Jocelyn Dearborn.
The score stayed at 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth, where Rhode Island's Nicole Massoni connected for a solo home run down the right field line, her second of the year.
URI then tried to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Amanda Sbei singled to left to open the frame, while Brittany Julich reached on an error. Fordham's defense then held firm, as Sarah Campbell made an over the shoulder catch in foul territory, and then gunned out Sbei going to third. The Rams almost completed a triple play, but Julich slid in safely to second. Melissa Wilson then struck out looking to end the ballgame, clinching the win for Fordham.
Jen Mineau (17-10) pitched the complete game for the win, allowing one run on eight hits with nine strikeouts. At the plate, Lindsey Kay Bright was a season-best 4-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Puccio and Dearborn each had a double and an RBI.
The same two teams will match up for the final game of their Atlantic 10 series on Saturday, May 2nd, beginning at noon.
