Bronx, N.Y. -
On a picture perfect day in the Bronx, the Fordham softball team closed out their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of the Wagner College Seahawks at Bahoshy Field on Tuesday. In game one, Melissa Andrews drove in three runs as Fordham picked up an 8-5 win, while Chelsea Plimpton pitched a three-hitter, striking out a season-high 10 batters as the Rams completed the sweep with an 8-1 win.
With the sweep, Fordham improves to 33-19 overall, while Wagner concludes their season at 22-29.
In game one, Fordham opened the scoring immediately, as Melissa Andrews singled up the middle, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by Lindsey Kay Bright.
Fordham made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second, as Meghan Shager, Jessica Weckenman, and Sarah Campbell all reached on infield singles to load the bases. Andrews then knocked home Shager with an RBI-ground out.
After Wagner closed the gap to 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Kate Eshelman, the Rams exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-1 edge. Erin Fisher, Shager, and Weckenman each had an RBI-single and a stolen base in the inning, while Andrews had a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Fordham tacked on another run in the fifth, as Megan Waldron doubled to left, moved to third on a passed ball, and later scored on an error.
Wagner though tried to put a rally together in the seventh, highlighted by a solo home run by Hailey Corthell and a two-run home run by Andrea Lazzari, but the Rams would hold on for the 8-5 victory.
For Fordham, Jen Mineau (16-10) got the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. At the plate, Andrews was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Shager and Weckenman each had two hits.
In game two, the Fordham combination of Andrews and Bright got the offense rolling in the first, as Andrews doubled to left and scored on a single by Bright.
Wagner then tied the game at one in the top of the fifth, as Cindy Bagnoli drew a walk and scored on a double by Emily Pierce.
The Rams responded with a four-run fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Shager and Andrews led off with back-to-back singles, and advanced a base on a passed ball. Pinch-hitter Nicole Callahan then connected for a two-run single to right, scoring both runners, and taking second on the throw home. After Sarah Campbell came on to pinch run, Jocelyn Dearborn doubled to the right center gap, scoring Campbell. Wagner thought they got out of the inning on a Fisher pop up in foul territory, but Lazzari dropped the ball, allowing Fisher's at bat to continue. Fisher made the Seahwaks pay for that mistake with a single through the left side, scoring Dearborn.
The Rams scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 8-1. Weckenman led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on a single up the middle by Shager. Shager then stole second, and moved to third on an infield single by Campbell. After Campbell stole second, both runners advanced on a passed ball, allowing Shager to score. Campbell then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Mary Beth Puccio.
The seven-run lead was more than enough for Fordham starter Chelsea Plimpton (10-3) as she was dominate, striking out a season-high 10 batters in the game, and allowing just one run on three hits in the complete game win. At the plate, Shager and Andrews each had two hits and two runs scored, while Dearborn was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Friday, May 1st, as they open a two-game series at Rhode Island, beginning at 3:00 PM.
