Saint Louis' Nicki Jost singled home Rachel Heet in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a come from behind win, as the Billikens completed a sweep of the Rams, 4-3, at the Billiken Sports Complex in St. Louis, Missouri.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 31-19 overall, 10-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis improves to 20-26 on the year, 11-3 in conference play.
Fordham got on the board immediately in the first, as Lindsey Kay Bright reached second on a throwing error, and scored on an RBI-double by Mary Beth Puccio.
The Billikens knotted the game at one in the bottom of the second, as Erin Cejka doubled to left and was pinch run for by Keri O'Keefe. Katie Johns then struck out, but the ball was dropped, allowing O'Keefe to go to third on the passed ball. O'Keefe then scored on a squeeze bunt by Caitlin Trevillyan.
Saint Louis then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Nicki Jost led off with a double and scored on an RBI-single by Cejka.
Fordham recaptured the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, taking a 3-2 edge. Puccio opened with a single to right center, and was pinch run for by Jessica Richards. Samantha Pellechio then roped a double to left that rolled all the way to the wall, scoring Richards from first. After a pair of outs put Pellechio at third, Erin Fisher reached on a fielding error, allowing Pellechio to score.
Saint Louis threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, as the Billikens had a runner on second with one out. Fordham reliever Chelsea Plimpton then got pinch-hitter Kelly Flanagan to strike out for the second out of the inning. Kerri Dockins then singled to right, but Erin Fisher roped a throw home, getting pinch-runner Rachel Faletto at the plate to end the threat.
The Billikens though would not go away in the seventh, as Rachel O'Connell blooped a double down the right field line. Rachel Heet then doubled to left center, scoring O'Connell, and went to third on an error. Jost then ended the game with an RBI-single to score Heet.
Plimpton (9-3) took the loss in relief, allowing one earned run on five hits over 3 1/3 innings. Jen Mineau started the game, pitching the first three innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. At the plate, Puccio and Pellechio were both 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jocelyn Dearborn also had a pair of hits.
The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 28th, as they host Wagner College for their final home doubleheader of the season, beginning at 2:00 PM.
