Bronx, N.Y. - After losing seven straight non-conference games, the Fordham baseball team rallied for 12 hits while freshman Jordan Grangard earned his first collegiate win as the Rams defeated Iona College, 8-3.
Fordham improves to 14-23 on the season while the Gaels fall to 2-31-1 for the year.
Iona got on the board first with a run in the second and two straight Gael doubles in the top of the fourth gave Iona a 2-0 lead.
The Rams could not come up with a hit until the fourth inning while Iona starter John Kassebaum was cruising until the bottom of the fifth when the Rams put up three runs in the inning.
Fordham did all of their work in fifth with two outs as Mike Mobbs walked and John Kahn found his way knocked on base with a single to center. With runners on the corners, Iona left fielder Andrew Passerelle misplayed a Nick Martinez fly ball that allowed both Mobbs and a heads up Kahn, who was running hard from first immediately after the ball was hit, to score. A Brian Kownacki infield single put Martinez on third while Danny Leach singled to right and bring home Martinez to cap off the scoring in the inning for the Rams.
Iona got a run back in the top of the sixth to tie the game, 3-3, though the Rams came right back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to give Fordham the 8-3 lead. The Rams, once again, did most of their damage with two outs as Ryan David led off the inning with a walk before Jordan Gilruth issued Mobbs a two-out walk to put runners on first and second.
Kahn came up big, yet again, this time with his bat as he laced a single to left, scoring David from second. Martinez kept the singles coming with a base hit through the left side, scoring Mobbs, while Kownacki's second hit of the game would bring in Kahn and put Martinez on third.
Up stepped Danny Leach to place his third base hit of the game to right-center field to bring in Martinez while Leach's 16th stolen base of the year put runners on second and third. Angelo Ponte walked to load the bases for David's infield single scoring the final run of the inning.
The Rams did not need any more runs from there on as Grangard only surrendered one run on four hits while striking out one in his four innings of relief work to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Danny Leach broke out of a 5-31 slump spanning eight games with a 4-5 night at the plate with two RBI. John Kahn and Brian Kownacki also kept their bats hot as Kahn went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI and Kownacki had a 3-5 game with a run and an RBI.
