Bronx, N.Y. - The rains held off just enough for the Fordham baseball team to squeeze in their game against Fairfield University as the Rams drop their second game in as many days with a 6-2 loss.
With their first home loss this year, the Rams fall to 9-15 on the season while Fairfield improves to 12-9.
Fairfield struck first with two runs in the top of the second. With one run already across the plate, Chris Horning hit a deep fly ball to center field, scoring David Dudish from third on the sacrifice fly. The Stags added another run in the top of the third with two doubles in the inning to take the 3-0 lead.
The Rams brought in their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. The inning started off with a single to left field by Alex Kenny followed by a base knock to right by Stephen McSherry. Senior Rob Iacono hustled down to first to beat out a double-play on his ground ball to third to put runners on the corners for Nick Martinez. The freshman did not disappoint, knocking a ball into right field, plating Kenny.
Fordham got things going, once again, with a run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the score to 3-2. Just like in the fifth, Kenny led off with a single to left and wound up on second with his third stolen base on the year. Martinez delivered once more with a ball just out of the Fairfield first baseman's reach for his second RBI of the game.
The score remained 3-2 until the top of the ninth, when Fairfield brought in three runs as sophomore John Flanagan started out the inning on the hill by issuing three straight walks on only 13 pitches. Senior Chris Kaible came in to try and get out of the bases loaded no-out jam, but surrendered a double to left and a sacrifice fly before getting out of the inning.
The Rams had their chances late in the game, with runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the eighth and the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but the Fordham bats were not able to bring the runners home.
Though freshman Daniel Munday picks up his third loss of the year, it was not a bad outing on the mound as Munday gave up three runs on five hits, two walks while striking out five in his seven innings of work.
At the plate, Nick Martinez went 2-3 with two RBI and a walk while Alex Kenny had a 2-4 day with two runs.
The Rams are back in action on Friday, April 3, as they host game one of a three-game series against the Saint Joseph's Hawks, starting at 4:00 PM at Houlihan Park.
