Softball Rallies for 4-2 Win Over St. John's

Queens, N.Y. - Fordham starting pitcher Chelsea Plimpton, a transfer from St. John's, made her return to Queens a fashionable one, as the sophomore threw a complete game four-hitter, as the Rams put together a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Red Storm, capped by a two-run double by Melissa Andrews in the top of the seventh.

With the win, Fordham extends its win streak to seven games and improved to 23-12 on the season, while St. John's is now 14-14 overall.

Fordham started out on the right foot in the first, as Mary Beth Puccio connected for a solo home run to centerfield, her third of the season, for a 1-0 lead.

St. John's then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth, as Kacee Cox hit a two-run home run to center, scoring Chelsea Durning, who reached on a double.

Jocelyn Dearborn got the Rams' seventh inning rally started with a double to left center.


The Rams then used a three-run rally in the top of the seventh to re-take the lead by a 4-2 count. Jocelyn Dearborn led off with a double, and later scored on a pair of wild pitches by St. John's starter Linzee Sumrall. Pinch-hitter Maggie Seidel then walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Meghan Shager then drew a walk and stole second to put runners at second and third with one out. After a strikeout, Melissa Andrews ripped a two-run double down the left field line, scoring both runners and giving Fordham the lead.

The Rams would hold the Red Storm at bay in the seventh, led by Plimpton (4-1), who finished with the complete game win, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. At the plate, Mary Beth Puccio was 2-for-3 with a home run, while Melissa Andrews was 1-for-4 with a two-run double.

The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Friday, April 3rd, as they host Atlantic 10 opponent, Saint Joseph's University, beginning at 3:00 PM.
