Softball's Perfect Weekend Ends With Mineau's Second No-Hitter

College Park, Md. - Despite the not so kind weather conditions in College Park, the Fordham softball team did not let the weather dictate play, as the Rams finished the Maryland Invitational with a perfect 5-0 record, defeating Seton Hall, 5-1, and Delaware, 10-0 in five innings. Highlighting the day, Fordham's Jen Mineau threw her second no-hitter of the season in game two.

With the two wins, Fordham extends their win streak to seven, and are now 15-8 overall.

In game one, Beckah Wiggins drove in two runs, and gave up only one run on six hits, as Fordham defeated the Seton Hall Pirates, 5-1.

Fordham opened the scoring in the top of the second with a single run. Jocelyn Dearborn drew a walk, and was sacrificed to third by Megan Waldron. Beckah Wiggins, the Rams' starting pitcher, then helped her own cause with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Dearborn.

The Rams extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning with a pair of tallies. Lindsey Kay Bright started the rally with an infield single, and moved to second on a groundout. Samantha Pellechio then hit a grounder to short, but Bright beat the tag at third, leaving runners at first and third. Jessica Richards then pinch ran for Pellechio and stole second. Dearborn then loaded the bases as she reached on an error. Waldron then hit a grounder to short, which the throw home was dropped by the catcher on the force play, allowing Bright to score. Wiggins then drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run.

Seton Hall cut into the Fordham lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Nalin Bennett led off with a double to center and moved to third on a single by Kealan Waldron. Bennett then scored on an RBI-ground out by Kristen Kaelin.

Fordham extended their lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. Dearborn started the frame with a double off the outstretched glove of the Seton Hall leftfielder. Waldron then singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw with Dearborn going to third. After Jo Krasnisky pinch ran for Waldron, Dearborn scored on a wild pitch, while Krasnisky would score on a fly ball by Erin Fisher.

The Fordham pitching trio of Wiggins, Chelsea Plimpton, and Jen Mineau combined to throw a six-hitter, as Wiggins got the win, improving to 7-4. She threw the first four innings, allowing one run on six hits, while Plimpton pitched 1 2/3 of hitless relief. Mineau recorded last four outs for her fourth save of the season.

At the plate, Bright was 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Dearborn was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Wiggins also drove in two runs.

In game two, Mineau threw her second career no-hitter, allowing just two batters to reach base, while Sarah Campbell drove in three runs, as Fordham topped Delaware, 10-0 in five innings to finish the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.

Fordham got the early jump start in the top of the second, as Pellechio connected for her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to center.

The Rams extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth, as Dearborn got things started with a two-out walk, while Waldron singled to center. Wiggins then popped up a foul ball, but it would be dropped, extending the at bat. Wiggins made that error hurt, singling to center to score Dearborn for a 2-0 edge. Sarah Campbell then drove a two-run single to left, scoring Waldron from third and Wiggins from second for a four-run lead.

Fordham then capped the scoring with a six-run fifth inning to take a 10-0 lead, as the first six batters all reached base. Andrews began the rally with a triple into the right field corner, and scored on an infield single by Bright. Puccio then sent Bright to third with a single through the right side. After a walk loaded the bases, Dearborn hit a line drive to center, which went in and out of the centerfielder's glove, allowing two runs to score. Richards then pinch ran for Pellechio, and scored on a double to left by Waldron with Dearborn taking third. Fordham finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Wiggins and an RBI-single by Campbell.

Mineau (7-4) was in control from the get go, allowing just two over the minimum, which was a walk in the first and a hit by pitch in the third. She finished with two strikeouts over the five hitless innings for her second no-hitter of the week, and the third ever in Fordham softball history.

At the plate, Campbell was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Waldron was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Dearborn also scored a pair of runs, while Wiggins drove in a pair.

The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, March 18th, as they play two games in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Fordham will match up with Longwood University at 2:00 PM and then meet North Carolina at 6:00 PM.
