The Fordham softball team got back to work on Saturday, posting a 5-2 win over Florida Atlantic, while falling to 4-3 to Providence. With the split, the Rams are now 3-4 on the season.
In the first game of the day, Providence used a four-run rally in the top of the sixth inning to top the Rams, 4-3.
The game was scoreless through the first 4 ½ innings until Fordham grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jocelyn Dearborn drew a one out walk, and then came around to score on an RBI-double by Mary Beth Puccio.
The Friars responded with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Huber opened the frame by reaching second on an error. After a strikeout, Sheehy singled through the left side, putting runners at first and third. Becker then singled home Huber to tie the game with Sheehy taking second. Stratton then tripled to right center, scoring both runners. Rossi then singled to right to bring home Stratton for the three-run advantage.
The Rams tried to put together a late inning rally in the bottom of the seventh, as Lindsey Bright led off with an infield single, and scored on a two-run home run by Dearborn, her third of the season. The Rams however could get the tying run in, falling by one.
For Fordham, Beckah Wiggins () took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. At the plate, Bright was 3-for-4 with Meghan Shager picking up a pair of hits.
In game two, Fordham got right out of the gate, as Melissa Andrews opened the game with a triple to left. Bright then walked, but ball four was wild, allowing Andrews to score.
The Owls tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, as Amy Bukovich singled with one out, and then scored on an RBI-double by Blair Bodenmiller.
The Rams regained the lead in the top of the fourth with a single run. Bright started things, as she ripped a double off the shortstop glove. After a ground out, Samantha Pellechio hit a ground ball that the shortstop couldn't handle, putting runners at first and third. Jessica Richards would pinch run for Pellechio, but would be thrown out for the second out of the inning. After a walk to Mary Beth Puccio, Bright would score on a wild pitch.
Fordham increased their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jessica Weckenman opened the frame with a single up the middle, followed by a walk to Erin Fisher. After a pair of groundouts that moved the runners to second and third, FAU pitcher Amber Barton uncorked her third wild pitch of the game to score Weckenman. Bright then hit a ground ball to second, which went right past the fielder, allowing Fisher to score.
FAU got an unearned run back in the bottom of the sixth, as Bodenmiller, who reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a groundout, but would score on a error later in the inning.
The Rams got that run back in the top of the seventh to lead, 5-2, as Fisher walked, moved to third on two ground out and scored on an error by the second baseman.
Jen Mineau (2-2) took care of the rest, getting the final three outs of the game, as she allowed just one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. At the plate, Andrews was 1-for-4 with a triple, while Fisher scored two runs.
The Fordham softball team will wrap up play at the FAIU Strike Out Cancer tournament on Sunday, February 22nd, with games against Arkansas and FIU, both in Coral Gables, Florida.
