Women's Basketball Topped by Saint Joseph's

Bronx, N.Y. - Three Fordham women's basketball players scoring in double-digit figures was not enough to take down Saint Joseph's as the Rams fell to the Hawks, 68-52, in the Rams' second to last home game of the 2008-09 season.

Fordham falls to 8-18 on the season (1-10 Atlantic 10) while St. Joseph's improves to 12-14 (4-7 Atlantic 10).

The Hawks jumped out to an 18-8 lead with 8:59 remaining in the first half. Freshman Tyonna Willingham and sophomore Tiffany Stokes cut the Saint Joseph's lead to six while Randall Hurst kept it at a six point deficit after responding to a Mariame Djouara layup with jumper from the left side.

Saint Joseph's would push the lead back to ten until freshman Becky Peters responded to the short Hawks offensive rally with two straight layups to bring the score to 24-18 with 3:59 to go in the half.

For the remainder of the first-half, The Hawks would outscore the Rams, 6-2, to go up 33-20 entering midway point.

Saint Joseph's capitalized on 13 Fordham first-half turnovers, turning the Rams' miscues into 14 Hawks points.

The second half opened up evenly as each team knocked down 11 points in the first six minutes of play. It was then that Saint Joseph's would run the court, scoring seven unanswered points to put the Hawks in the lead, 51-33, with 8:09 to go.

Willingham and Stokes fought hard to cut into the 18 point deficit as the two teamed up for 12 of the Rams' final 19 points. But in the end, Saint Joseph's would outlast Fordham to claim the victory, 68-52.

Ashley Logue topped all scorers with 16 points while adding nine rebounds for the Hawks. Michelle Baker and Brittany Ford chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Saint Joseph's.

Tiffany Stokes led the Rams in scoring and rebounds with 14 points and eight boards as the sophomore added two steals, one assist and one block in the game. Tyonna Willingham had a break-out game by shooting 4-9 from the field for 10 points. Annie Zopf added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Next on Fordham's plate is a road trip to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the Duquesne Dukes on Saturday, February 21st at 1:00 PM.

Notes: Fordham is now 0-3 on the season when facing a Jesuit college or university as they dropped decisions to George Washington and Saint Louis earlier in the season...The Rams have one final Jesuit program to face when they close out the season with nationally ranked Xavier on February 28th...With her two three-pointers, Annie Zopf is now two treys shy for a seventh place on the all-time list for 3-point field goals made...Beth Ann Dickson holds that seventh spot with 105 while Zopf is right behind with 103 on her career...Tyonna Willingham bucket career highs with her 10 points and four field goals made as her previous career highs were six points (1/31/09) and two field goals (1/31/09).
