12/13/09 - Highlights vs. UNC Greensboro

UNC Greensboro's Lakian Hyson scored a game-high 21 points to go with four assists and four steals, as the Spartans topped the Fordham Rams, 69-63, at the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday. The loss snapped Fordham's four-game win streak, while also being the Rams' first loss at home this season.
Fordham is now 6-4 on the season, while UNCG improved to 2-6.
Striving for their fifth straight win, Fordham opened with a 5-0 lead a basket by Randall Hurst and a three-pointer from Becky Peters. The Spartans then scored the next ten points to grab a 10-5 lead, behind five points from Hyson. After Fordham tied the game at 14 on a lay-up by Kristina Bell, the lead went back and forth between the two teams, until Sarah Folwell hit a three-pointer for the Spartans, to give them a 28-24 lead.
Fordham however closed out the half with an 8-2 surge, capped off with a buzzer beater jumper by Peters to give Fordham a 32-30 halftime lead. At the break, Hurst led all scorers with 11 points and five rebounds.

Tiffany Stokes then opened the second half with a pair of baskets, followed by a lay-up from Hurst, giving Fordham its largest lead of the game by eight, 38-30. The Spartans fought back within one, 40-39, before Fordham regained its eight-point edge on a three-point play from Hurst and a three-pointer by Bell with 12:45 remaining.
The Spartans slowly chipped away at the Fordham lead closing within three, 54-51 on a jumper from Monique Floyd. Hyson then hit back-to-back shots to give UNCG their first lead, 55-54, since late in the first half. After the Spartans increased the lead to three, Katie Vican knocked down a three-pointer for Fordham, tying the game at 57 with 4:21 to go. Hyson responded with a three-pointer of her own as the Spartans recaptured the lead with 3:29 left.
UNCG built the lead to six before Fordham cut the deficit to two, 63-61, on a lay-up from Vican and two free throws by Bell. The Rams however would not get any closer than two, as the Spartans hit 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 22 seconds to clinch the win, 69-63.
For Fordham, Hurst posted a team-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists, while Stokes just missed out on her second straight double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Peters chipped in 12 points and five rebounds with Bell tying a career-high at seven assists to go with seven points and six boards.
The Fordham women's basketball team is now off for exams until Tuesday, December 22nd, when the Rams have their annual "Battle of the Bronx" match-up with Manhattan College at Draddy Gymnasium, beginning at 7:00 PM.
