The Fordham volleyball team looked to keep their slim chance of postseason play alive on Sunday, as well as send off the senior class with a win against Temple, but Temple's Yun Yi Zhang registered 32 kills to rally the Owls to a five-set win over Fordham at the Rose Hill Gym. Final set scores were 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, and 15-12.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-18 overall, 3-10 in the Atlantic 10, and eliminates Fordham from postseason play.
Things looked great early on, as the Rams posted back-to-back 25-23 set wins in set one and two.
Temple however got their momentum going in set three behind Zhang, as she registered five kills in the third set to put Temple back in the match at two sets to one.
The fourth set came down to the wire with the Owls having set point at 24-20. Though Fordham got two of those points back on a kill by Christi Griffiths and a set error, the Owls got a kill from Cayleigh Ashman to force a deciding set.
In set five, it looked like Fordham took control of the match back, leading 10-7 following back-to-back kills by Sara Friede. Temple however reeled off four straight points, the last on a Zhang kill, to grab an 11-10 lead. A Griffiths' kill tied the score back up at 11, but Zhang recorded three more kills, including one on match point to give Temple the match.
Zhang had eight kills in each of the final two sets to finish with 32 kills, which is the second most recorded in a volleyball match at the Rose Hill Gym.
For Fordham, Katherine Burrell, Samantha Jacobson, and Jolanda Gunning-Snowden each played their final home match at Fordham. Burrell finished with 35 assists, seven digs, and two aces, with Jacobson having 11 assists, four blocks and two kills. Gunning-Snowden added three kills in her final home performance. Besides the seniors, Friede (12 kills, 12 digs) and Kailee May (11 kills, 14 digs, three aces) each recorded double-doubles with Katie Wells adding 10 kills and three blocks.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, November 13th, when they play at Duquesne, beginning at 4:00 PM.
