Behind a double-double from Kelly Ruth, the Xavier Musketeers slimmed the Fordham Rams' chances of making the Atlantic 10 Championship, as they swept a three-set match from Fordham in Cincinnati, Ohio. Final set scores were 25-14, 26-24, and 25-19.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-17 overall, 3-9 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier improves to 17-10 overall, 9-3 in the conference.
Set one went Xavier's way in an 11-point win, as they held Fordham to a .000 hitting percentage behind four team blocks.
The second set was far closer, as the Rams were down 16-13 at the midway point. Fordham then rattled off four straight points, two on kills by Sara Friede, to take an 18-17 lead.
Xavier however battled back to earn set point at 24-22, but Fordham came right back with a block and a Xavier set error to tie the score at 24. The Musketeers then snatched the set away with kills by Lauren Kaminsky and Kelly Ruth to win, 26-24.
Set three saw Fordham within one, 19-18, on a kill by Kailee May, but Xavier scored six of the final seven points to win, 25-19.
For Fordham, Friede had eight kills to go with nine digs, while Katie Wells had nine kills. Katherine Burrell recorded another double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs, with Jenna Hart adding six kills, four digs, and five blocks.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, November 8th, when they host Temple University in their home season finale at 2:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
