After a short break for Thanksgiving, the Fordham women's basketball team got back to work on Friday at the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament, where the Rams fell in the opening game of the tournament to host Florida Atlantic, 66-53, at FAU Gymnasium in Boca Raton, Fla.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 2-3 overall, while Florida Atlantic improves to 3-3.
Fordham started with a 9-8 lead, eight minutes into the game, highlighted by two buckets by Kristina Bell. The Rams extended that lead to three on a pair of free throws by Bell, but FAU came right back with three-pointers by Teri Stamps and Carla Stubbs to grab an 18-15 edge with 7:45 left in the first half.
Fordham quickly regained the advantage, as Katie Vican hit a three-pointer to tie the game, followed by a lay-up by Tiffany Stokes to take a 20-18 lead. The Owls however regained the lead on a three-point play by Brittany Bowe, 21-20. Fordham stayed right with the Owls as Vican hit her second three-pointer of the half, but the Owls finished with an 8-2 push to end the period up, 33-25.
The Rams cut into the lead at the beginning of the second half, trailing by seven, 43-36, behind three straight baskets from Randall Hurst and a three-point play from Stokes. The Rams kept fighting their way back as Vican connected for a three-point play, making the score, 49-41, with 11:05 to go.
Vican and Hurst continued to lead the Rams' comeback effort with Hurst hitting a basket with 9:10 remaining, followed by another three-point play by Vican to pull Fordham within six, 54-48. FAU however put together a 12-3 run over a five-minute stretch to extend their lead to 63-48 with 3:38 left, and go on to a 13-point win.
For Fordham, Hurst just missed out on her first double-double of the season, recording 15 points and nine rebounds, while Vican added 12 points and five boards off the bench. Stokes chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, with Bell having eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Florida Atlantic was led by Brittany Bowe, who had 19 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
Fordham now moves on to the consolation game of the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, November 28th, as they play San Jose State at 2:00 PM in Boca Raton, Fla.
