Cambridge, Mass. -
Fordham's Mikey Edwards scored four goals to lead the Rams to a 12-9 victory over Iona College to advance to the fifth place game at the 2009 Men's Eastern Championship in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Goalie Christian Flessner finished with six saves in the contest as the Rams moved to 3-0 on the year against Iona.
The Rams never trailed in the game opening up a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period and carried a 5-1 advantage into halftime thanks to first half natural goals by Victor Bautista Medina and Martin de Jong in the first quarter, with a five meter penalty shot score by Edwards, a natural goal by Tim Simo and a man-up tally by Andrew McKernin in the second quarter.
Iona was never able to overcome the deficit as the Gaels closed to within 5-3 and 6-4, but a late run by the Rams in which Fordham outscored Iona 4-1 during the final 4:42 of the third period gave the Rams a 10-5 lead through 24 minutes of play entering the fourth period.
The Rams put the game away in the first four minutes of the fourth period as Simo netted a tally at 6:41 and Iona's Matt Joslyn countered with a man-up score at 6:18 and Seth Tasman chipped in an advantage score of his own at 5:16 to move the Gaels to within 11-7.
However, Daniel Munoz split the Iona defense for a rocket into the cage at the 4:04 mark to return the lead to five at 12-7.
Iona attempted to rally back into the contest with a man-up score at the 1:01 mark as Joslyn flipped in his game-high fifth marker of the day, but the Fordham defense would yield only one more score when Cody Siemeck uncorked a blast from the wing for the 12-9 final.
The victory advances the Rams into the fifth place game at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 22nd against Brown University, in a rematch of the Northern Division Championship game from two weeks ago.
