Despite the third straight 20-point game from Randall Hurst, the Fordham Rams could not overcome the 48% shooting of the Bucknell Bison, as the Rams fell to Bucknell by a 63-56 score as Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pa.
With the loss, Fordham moves to 1-2 overall, while Bucknell earns their first win at 1-3.
The Rams started strong by leaning on their senior, Randall Hurst. Hurst connected on an early basket, as well as a three-point play to give Fordham a 7-5 advantage.
Bucknell then grabbed the lead with a quick 7-0 run, but Fordham eventually knotted the score at 18 on a three-pointer by Becky Peters with 8:28 left in the first half. The Rams then took the lead behind two baskets and a pair of free throws by Hurst, 25-22, at the 1:32 mark.
The lead was short lived however after two baskets by Bucknell, which was then followed by a buzzer beater three-pointer by Morgan Wrightson, leaving the Bison ahead, 29-25 at the half.
Bucknell built that lead to eight points in the second half at 42-34, but Fordham wouldn't go away as Katie Vican hit a three-point shot, while Kristina Bell knocked down a pair of free throws to pull the Rams within three with 11:17 to go.
After Bucknell got back ahead by six, 47-41, Fordham cut the lead down to two, 47-45, behind a basket by Caitlin Shadbolt and a steal and fast break basket by Kyara Weekes.
The Bison later built the lead back up to eight, 55-47, capped by a three-pointer by Rachel Voss with 3:14 remaining.
Fordham got back within six, 57-51, late in the half on a jumper by Tiffany Stokes, but Bucknell went six-for-six down the stretch from the free throw to close out the game, 63-56.
For Fordham, Hurst netted a team-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting to go with seven rebounds, as she recorded her third straight 20-point performance. She is the first Ram to accomplish that since Mobolaji Akiode did so late in the 2002-03 season.
Vican chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals off the bench, with Stokes adding eight points and three rebounds. Weekes finished the game with four points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, setting career-highs in assists and steals.
Bucknell was paced by Morgan Wrightson's game-high 25 points and Joyce Novacek's 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Tuesday, November 24th, when they host the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
