Bronx, N.Y. - (Nov. 21, 2009) - Hosting their annual tri-meet with Rhode Island and Duquesne, the Fordham swimming & diving teams completed a meet sweep, as the Ram women defeated Duquesne, 161-73, and Rhode Island, 162-78, while the Fordham men defeated Duquesne, 126.5-103.5. With the wins, the Fordham women improve to 6-0, while the men are now 4-1.
For the third straight meet, freshman Brienne Ryan led off the 400 medley relay with a school record performance in the 100 backstroke at 55.76 seconds, bettering her time of 56.83 set last weekend. The relay of Ryan, Nicole Marshall, Kelly Bunster, and Tressa Dunn would use that record time to win the event in 3:52.64.
Ryan would also win two individual events in season-best times, taking the 50 freestyle in 23.84 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 2:02.65.
Not to be outdone, the men's 400 medley relay, consisting of Billy Colton, Matthew Grabiak, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs, won in a season-best time of 3:28.11.
Fordham's Megan McGorry continued her strong efforts in the distance freestyle events, winning both the 1000 (10:23.70) and 500 freestyle (5:03.25), while Lucien Monson posted season-best efforts in the same events, placing second in the 1000 (9:55.82) and 500 (4:47.44) freestyle.
In the 200 freestyle, Caitlin Napoli won in a season-best time of 1:52.93, while Ryan Coombs also posted a season-best time (1:43.86) and claimed second. Coombs would later take first in the 200 butterfly in a season-best time of 1:55.79, while Napoli was second in the 500 freestyle (5:05.15).
Also claiming individual wins were Billy Colton in the 50 freestyle (21.56 - season-best), Courtney Collyer in the 200 butterfly (2:05.64), Bunster in the 100 freestyle (52.95), Robert Gitman in the 200 backstroke (1:54.88 - season-best), and Grabiak in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.07).
In the 400 freestyle relays, the women's team of Bunster, Kellie Lyver, Lara Moseley, and Napoli won their race in 3:34.15, while the men's team of Devon Morris, Eric Prendergast, Jason Dobbs, and Colton were just edged out for first by .61 seconds, finishing in a season-best time of 3:09.63.
In diving, Elizabeth Dorger and Benjamin Otto swept both events. Dorger had a season-best score of 257.78 in the one-meter dive, while scoring 244.65 in the three-meter competition. Otto won the one-meter at 245.10, while posting a season-best score of 299.48 in the three-meter board.
The Fordham men's swimming team will next be in action on Monday, November 23rd, when they host Columbia at 6:00 PM, while the women's team is off until December 5th, when the Rams host a tri-meet with Boston College and Williams College.
