Women's Basketball Comeback Effort Comes Up Short Against CCSU

New Britain, Conn. - Despite a scrappy second half comeback attempt by Fordham, four Central Connecticut players scored in double figures as the Blue Devils handed the Rams a 64-57 loss at Detrick Gym in New Britain, Connecticut.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 1-1 on the season, while Central Connecticut improves to 1-2.

After a sluggish start and trailing by 12 in the first half, Fordham pulled within six, 19-13, as the Rams got baskets by Kyara Weekes and Becky Peters, as well as two free throws from Randall Hurst. P.J. Wade however scored the final two baskets of the half for the Blue Devils, giving them a 25-17 lead at the break.

At the break, neither team seemed to handle the ball well, as the teams combined for 27 turnovers. Central Connecticut's Kerianne Dugan led all scorers with 11 points, while Fordham's Randall Hurst had nine points.

The Rams came out firing in the second half, as Peters hit a three-pointer and scored a three-point play to get the Rams within six, 31-25. It was then Hurst with a pair of baskets for Fordham, but Leanne Crockett responded with two straight threes, extending the Blue Devil lead to nine points, 46-37.

The Rams continued to claw away at the Blue Devils' lead behind two three-pointers by Peters to bring Fordham within four, 53-49, with four minutes remaining. After two buckets by Central Connecticut, Peters hit another three-pointer, her fourth of the half, to keep Fordham in the game, 57-52.

After CCSU made one of two free throws, Fordham closed the gap to 58-55, on a three-point play by Hurst with 1:17 remaining. The Rams however would fall victim to the Blue Devils' free throwing shooting, as they hit six-of-eight down the stretch to close out a 64-57 win.

For Fordham, Peters netted 21 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to go with seven rebounds, while Hurst posted her second straight 20-point game with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Central Connecticut was led by Kerianne Dugan's 17 points and five rebounds, while Shontice Simmons had ten points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, November 21st, as they play at Bucknell, beginning at 5:00 PM.
