Kingston, R.I. -
Playing close contests was nothing new to the Fordham men's soccer team. The team played 13 games this season with a one goal or less difference, posting a 7-3-3 record. Unfortunately for Ram fans, Fordham's good luck in close games turned bad, as St. Bonaventure's Chris Leko scored the only goal of the game to top Fordham, 1-0, at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship in Kingston, Rhode Island.
The loss ends Fordham's season at 9-7-3 overall, as well as their bid for a second Atlantic 10 Championship.
Offensive opportunities were few and far between in the opening half, as the Rams had only two shots, compared to four by the Bonnies.
Fordham's best chance came in the 15th minute on a Mike McTigue shot, but St. Bonaventure's David Flynn made the stop.
Of St. Bonaventure's four shots, three were on net with Fordham goalkeeper Ryan Meara up to the task, making all three stops.
In the second half, the Bonnies cracked the scoreboard in the 61st minute, following a Fordham foul. On the set piece, Chris Leko headed in his first goal of the season off an assist from Joe Miller.
Fordham tried to find the equalizer but could only find one scoring chance off the foot of Matt Courtenay in the 85th minute, but Flynn made the stop, advancing St. Bonaventure to the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
In net, Flynn made two saves in the shutout, while Meara made six saves for Fordham.
