Volleyball Gets Needed Win Over 49ers

Bronx, N.Y. - Needing to play their best volleyball over the final five matches of the season in order to make the Atlantic 10 Championship, the Fordham Rams got outstanding offensive performances from Sara Friede and Katie Wells to post a five-set win over the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday at the Rose Hill Gym. Final set scores were 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, and 15-8.

With the win, Fordham improves to 13-16 overall, 3-8 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte falls to 15-12 overall, 6-5 in league play.

Fordham started the match on fire in the opening set, hitting .400 as a team, committing just two errors on their way to a seven-point set win. Katie Wells did the most damage for Fordham, connecting on six kills.

The 49ers came back in set two to even the match at one set apiece. With Fordham leading 19-17, Charlotte tallied four straight points, the last on a block by Sheri Davis and Jennifer Webb, to take a 21-19 lead. The Rams got back within one, 23-22, on a kill by Wells, but Charlotte wrapped up the set on a kill by Kathleen Hicks and an ace by Abbie Rees.

Fordham regained the momentum in the third set. With the score tied at 11, the Rams reeled off seven of the next nine points, capped by a Christi Griffiths kill to lead, 18-13. Charlotte eventually tied the score at 21 all, but Fordham scored the final four points to win the set, as Griffiths, Kailee May, and Sara Friede scored kills on the last three points.

The seesaw affair continued in the fourth set. At 9-9, Charlotte used a quick 6-1 spurt to open up a five-point lead, 15-10. The 49ers would lead by as many as six the rest of the way, as they forced a deciding set.

In the final set, Fordham scored the first four points with two on kills by Griffiths. The 49ers closed to within two at 8-6, but the Rams took advantage of three Charlotte errors down the stretch to post a 15-8 win in the final set.

For Fordham, Sara Friede posted a match-high 16 kills to go with 12 digs, while Kailee May had 14 kills and 11 digs. Katie Wells added 13 kills and four blocks with Christi Griffiths having 11 kills and eight digs. Katherine Burrell also had a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs with Samantha Jacobson adding 19 assists, three kills, and three blocks.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, November 6th, as they play at Xavier, beginning at 7:00 PM.
