Volleyball Fights Hard, But Falls In Four Sets To Dayton

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team put together a game effort against the Dayton Flyers on Friday night at the Rose Hill Gym, but succumb to the Flyers in four sets, 25-18, 27-25, 21-25, and 25-19.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 8-13 overall, 0-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improves to 15-2 overall, 4-0 in the Atlantic 10.

The first set saw Dayton jump out to a big 18-7 lead, and eventually won the set by seven, led by Amanda Cowdrey's four kills.

The Flyers looked to repeat their first set performance, as they led 10-3, following three Fordham attack errors. Fordham would be down by as many as nine points, but battled all the way back to take a 23-22 lead on an ace by Kailee May.

Dayton though got a kill and a block to earn their first set point at 24-23. Fordham would fight off two set points, but the Flyers finally won the set, 27-25, on a kill by Cowdrey. Cowdrey and Tiffany Gaerke each had four kills for Dayton, while Christi Griffiths led the attack for Fordham with eight kills and three blocks in the set.

Set three saw Fordham take charge early behind three blocks to take a 9-3 lead. Dayton would rally back even, tying the score at 20 all. Fordham however picked up a kill by Griffiths and back-to-back blocks to win set three, 25-21.

The Rams tried to keep their momentum going in the fourth set, leading 14-13 after a kill by Kim Capicotto. Dayton responded with a 7-2 run, highlighted by two aces by Lindsay Fletemier, to grab a 20-16 advantage. Fordham got back within three, 21-18, on a Jenna Hart kill, but Dayton scored four of the next five points to close out the match, 25-19.

For Fordham, Griffiths led the way with a match-high 15 kills to go with eight digs and eight blocks, while Katie Wells had eight kills and eight blocks. The 15 kills gives Griffiths 987 career kills, moving past Beth Crockett (981) for seventh place on the Rams' career kills list, while also moving into second place on the Rams' career blocks list at 293 total blocks. Wells also hit a personal milestone with the 200th block of her career.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, October 10th, as they host the Xavier Musketeers at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
