Women's Soccer Falls To URI, 4-0

Kingston, R.I. - Rhode Island's Ashley Evangelista tallied a goal and a pair of assists as Rhode Island earned a 4-0 victory over Fordham at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday night.

With the loss, Fordham drops to 3-10-1 overall, 2-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island improves to 4-7-1 overall, 2-3 in the league.

Fordham tried to get the early advantage on a pair of shots from Katie McDermott and one from Leah Loguidice, but Rhode Island keeper Tara Murphy kept the game scoreless with three stops.

Rhode Island's Amanda Thomas then began the scoring at the 34:17 mark, converting a free kick from Kaylen Shimoda on the left side.

Just over four minutes later, Ina Bjorklid headed an Evangelista crossing pass by Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther, making it 2-0.

In the second half, Rhode Island tacked on two late goals. Evangelista made it 3-0, dribbling through two Fordham defenders before finding the back of the net in the 80th minute, while Alexis Veith closed out the scoring shortly after, taking an Evangelista cross from the right side, and beating Suther for the goal.

Rhode Island's Tara Murphy made seven saves for her first shutout of the season, while Suther made six saves for Fordham.

The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 11th, when they play at Massachusetts, beginning at 1:00 PM.
