Behind a pair of goals by freshman Annie Worden, the Fordham women's soccer team put together its best performance of the season, as they defeated the Xavier Musketeers by a 4-0 score on Jack Coffey Field on Sunday.
With the win, Fordham improves to 3-9-1 overall, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier falls to 2-9-1 overall, 1-2-1 in league play. The win also marked the fourth straight win for Fordham over Xavier, dating back to 2005.
The Rams started their dominant performance early in the first half, as off a Lauren Bustos free kick, Katie McDermott headed the ball off the left post, which Leah Loguidice was able to put in on the rebound attempt for her third goal of the season.
The Rams made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, as Annie Worden picked up a loose ball off a deflection, and was able to sneak it by Xavier goalkeeper Kelly Farrell for her second goal of the season.
At the half, Fordham finished with a 9-0 shot advantage as well as collecting five corner kicks.
The game stayed in Fordham's favor, even with two goalie changes by Xavier in the second half. In the 67th minute, the Rams made it a 3-0 game, as Loguidice sidestepped a Xavier defender, finding McDermott at the top of the box. McDermott then fired a shot to the bottom right corner through Xavier goalkeeper Jenny Rosen for her second goal of the season.
Fordham then capped the scoring in the 87th minute to finish with a 4-0 victory. Mary Hennessy crossed the ball from the left side to Worden, who was able to get it by goalkeeper Jennifer Perri, for her second goal of the day and third of the year.
In net, Fordham's Rachel Suther had little work to do, making one save in the shutout, as Xavier mustered only two shots in the game. Fordham finished with a 20-2 shot edge, while having 12 corner kicks to none for Xavier.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 9th, as they play at Rhode Island, beginning at 7:00 PM.
