Pittsburgh, Pa. -
The Fordham women's soccer team looked to solidify their spot at next week's Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday as they opened their final conference weekend at Duquesne. The Dukes however spoiled that notion with a 4-1 victory over the Rams at Rooney Field. Despite the loss, Fordham did however get enough help from around the league on Friday to ensure their fourth straight A-10 Championship berth.
With the loss, Fordham fell to 7-11-1 overall, 6-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne improved to 6-11 overall, 3-7 in league play. With losses by both La Salle and Richmond earlier in the day, the Rams' 18 conference points will qualify them for the Atlantic 10 Championship, held on November 5th-8th at Charlotte.
Fordham's seed is still to be determined, as if they beat St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Fordham will be the #3 seed. A tie or loss will give Fordham the #4 seed.
Things started off on the wrong foot for Fordham, as Duquesne's Lauren Ott opened the scoring for Dukes in the 18th minute. Ott took a pass from Morgan Herbert and scored her first goal of the season from 15 yards out.
The Dukes then went on to score three more goals in the second half off the feet of Herbert (60'), Gia Marino (63') and Maggie Andrews (81') to make it a 4-0 lead for Duquesne.
Fordham did manage to break up the shutout in the 90th minute, as Cara Rooney scored off a deflected cross from in front of the net for her first collegiate goal.
In net, Duquesne's Brittney Findley made five saves for the win. Fordham's Sarah Zieman made two saves and allowed three goals in just over 65 minutes of work, while Rachel Suther allowed one goal in just over 24 minutes.
The Fordham women's soccer team now heads to St. Bonaventure for their regular season finale on Sunday, November 1st, beginning at 1:00 PM.
