Amherst, Mass. - Sophomore Tim Richardson scored his second goal in as many games to help give the Fordham men's soccer team their first win over the University of Massachusetts for the first time since 1998 while the Rams' 1-0 victory broke the Minutemen's five-game unbeaten streak.

With the win, Fordham improves to 3-5 while Massachusetts drops to 3-2-3.

Massachusetts out shot Fordham 7-3 in the first half, but Richardson was the only one to make his count. His shot from 20 yards out just over nine minutes into the game was the only score in the match with senior Alex Brunbauer collecting his first assist of the season.

The Minutemen had their chances, especially in the closing minutes of the half, but the Rams' were able to clear a corner kick with seven minutes remaining and a Brodie Steigerwald shot went high to close out the half.

All was quiet in the second half until the Minutemen's Ben Arikian's attempt to tie the game was saved by sophomore keeper Ryan Meara. That save was one of three in the half for Meara while his four total saves gave him his third shutout of the year.

Sophomore Matt Courtenay tried to give Fordham some breathing room, but his one and only shot of the match could not get passed Massachusetts goalie Shane Curran-Hays. Luckily for the Rams another goal was not needed as the defense held strong to give Fordham the win.

Fordham heads into Atlantic 10 play on Friday, October 9, when they head out to St. Bonaventure, N.Y. for a 3:30 PM start against the Bonnies.
