| 10/23/09 - Highlights vs. LaSalle & Senior Ceremony
Bronx, N.Y. -
Playing yet another game on a cold, rainy night, the Fordham women's soccer team celebrated Senior Night in style, as freshman Annie Worden sent off the senior class with a win, scoring the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute for a 1-0 shutout of La Salle University on Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham's fourth straight and third consecutive shutout, Fordham improves to 7-10-1 overall, 6-3 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle falls to 10-6-2 overall, 4-4-1 in the conference.
In a critical match-up between two teams fighting for their playoff lives, it was Fordham just missing opportunities in the first half. The Rams had shots from Brittany Hogan, Leah Loguidice, and Michelle Ancelj that all sailed over the crossbar in the first half.
The game stayed scoreless into the second half, where La Salle had a prime scoring chance on a header by Lauren Barker, but Fordham goalkeeper Sarah Zieman made the catch save.
Fordham had a golden opportunity again to net the first goal, as
Katie McDermott collected the ball on the left side of the box with La Salle keeper Melissa Sanger out of the net. McDermott fired a shot, but it just went over the crossbar.
After a pair of shots from La Salle's Traci DePasquale were stopped by Zieman, Fordham finally cracked the scoreboard at the 82:05 mark. Mariella Romano popped the ball up in the midfield toward the La Salle box. Annie Worden was able to get by a La Salle defender and flick the ball with her head over Sanger, which then rolled into the net for her fifth goal of the season.
The Rams were able to keep La Salle at bay for the final 7:55 of regulation for the 1-0 win. In net, Zieman made three saves to record her third consecutive shutout in three starts, while Sanger made one stop for the Explorers.
The Rams will next be in action next Friday, October 30th, as they play at Duquesne University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
