Volleyball Ousts Rutgers Behind Record-Setting Performance by Wells

Bronx, N.Y. - Behind a school record performance from Katie Wells, the Fordham volleyball team won their second straight match with a 3-1 win over Rutgers University at the Rose Hill Gym on Wednesday night. Final set scores were 25-17, 25-27, 25-22, and 25-11.

With the win, Fordham improves to 10-15 overall, while Rutgers falls to 8-14.

Most of the Rams' damage came from junior Katie Wells, who set a school record with a .778 hitting percentage for a four-set match. Wells finished the night with 15 kills on 18 attempts and only one attack error. The previous mark in a four-set match was .586 by Val Bosticco at Iona back in 1990. She also tied a career-high with eight total blocks against the Scarlet Knights.

Set one started with the Rams hitting .361 as a team to take the opening frame by eight points. Wells had five kills in the opening set, while Kailee May added four kills.

The following set was far tighter as the score was tied 17 times with the final one coming at 25 all. Rutgers' Kylie Orr registered a kill for their third set point at 26-25, and claimed the set on a Fordham error.

The momentum shifted back to Fordham early in the third set, as they went up 9-6 following a pair of aces by May. Rutgers however would rally back to eventually take a 21-20 lead on a Rams' error. Fordham then scored five of the next six points to win the set, highlighted by two kills from Wells and a block by Jenna Hart and Christi Griffiths.

Set four was all Fordham, as the team hit .458 with 12 kills and only one error. The Rams closed out the match with nine of the final ten points.

Besides Wells' night, May finished with a 12 kills, 14 digs and two aces, while Sara Friede added seven kills and nine digs. Griffiths chipped in six kills, nine digs, and six blocks, with Katherine Burrell and Samantha Jacobson having 24 and 16 assists, respectively.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, October 24th, when they host the University of Rhode Island at 2:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
