Despite a valiant comeback effort that saw the Fordham volleyball team tie the match at two sets apiece, it was Charlotte's 17 service aces which led the 49ers to a five-set win over the Rams. Set scores were 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, and 15-5.
With the loss, Fordham drops to 8-11 overall, 0-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte improves to 11-7 overall, 2-1 in league play.
Set one looked to be going Fordham's way, as they led 14-11 midway through the set. The 49ers however responded with a 12-1 run, which included four service aces by Kaitlin Knight, to eventually take the set, 25-21.
In set two, Charlotte led by as many as six points, before Fordham closed the gap to three, 20-17, late in the set. The 49ers then closed out the frame with five straight points, which included two aces by Kara Raker.
Fordham then began their comeback effort with a 25-22 set three win, as the Rams collected three team blocks and held Charlotte to a .116 hitting percentage.
It was more of the same in set four, as Charlotte hit just .069 in a 25-19 set loss to the Rams. Katie Wells led the way with five kills and two blocks for Fordham.
With the match tied at two sets apiece, Charlotte had 4-3 lead, but then scored the next five points, including three more aces by Raker to pull out to a 9-3 lead, eventually taking the match, 15-5.
For Fordham, Wells, Kailee May and Christi Griffiths each had 11 kills with May adding 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Jolanda-Gunning Snowden added nine kills with Katherine Burrell having 40 assists, nine digs, and three kills. Defensively, Michele Keathley added 12 digs and three assists.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, October 4th, when they play at George Washington, beginning at 1:00 PM.
