Behind a strong showing from Fordham's attackers on Saturday, the Fordham volleyball team finally snapped out of their 11-match slide with a three-set sweep over La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pa. Final set scores were 27-25, 25-22, and 25-18.
With the win, Fordham improves to 9-15 overall, 1-7 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle drops to 3-22 overall, 0-7 in league play.
The first set came down to the wire, where La Salle got the first set point at 24-23. The Rams thwarted that on a kill by Katie Wells, and then got the advantage on a block from Jenna Hart and Christi Griffiths. After La Salle tied it back up at 25, Brittany Daulton connected for back-to-back kills to give the set to Fordham, 27-25.
The Rams came from behind again in the second set, as the Explorers led 20-18. The Rams reeled off three straight kills, two of which by Hart, to take a 21-20 edge. After an error tied the score, the Rams picked up three more points, highlighted by a kill and a block by Katherine Burrell to earn set point, and eventually won, 25-22, on a kill by Wells.
Set three was all Fordham, as the Rams lead virtually the entire way, winning by a seven-point margin, behind five kills from Wells.
For Fordham, Wells had the best day with 11 kills, four blocks and a .667 hitting percentage, while Griffiths had nine kills and 12 digs. Daulton also had nine kills to go with 11 digs, with Kailee May adding nine kills as well. Burrell handled most of the setting duties with 28 assists, five kills, and five digs, while defensively Michele Keathley had 16 digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Wednesday, October 21st, when they host Rutgers at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
