Volleyball Stunned By Temple in Five Sets

Philadelphia, Pa. - In what looked to be a highlight night that saw Fordham jump out to a 2-0 lead at Temple as well as seeing Christi Griffith's 1,000th career kill turned into a crazy ending, as the Owls won the final three sets and steal a 3-2 match from the Rams at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia. Final set scores were 13-25, 25-27, 29-27, 25-20, and 15-10.

Temple kept Fordham away from their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season, improving to 8-7 overall, 4-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams have now dropped 11 in a row to fall to 8-15 on the year, 0-7 in league play.

Everything went Fordham's way in the opening set, hitting .455 as a team on their way to a 12-point set win. Late in the set with Fordham leading 21-10, Christi Griffiths connected for her 1,000th career kill, making her the seventh Ram to reach that milestone.

In set two, Temple built up as much as a six-point lead before Fordham battled all the way back to tie the score at 24 on a kill by Katie Wells. The Rams then got a service ace from Sara Friede to earn set point. After exchanging points, the Rams won the set 27-25 on a Temple attack error.

Set three was the turning point of the match, as the Rams had four different match points, but the Owls denied them on every one, tying the score at 26. The Owls eventually managed two set points of their own, making good on the second to win set three, 29-27.

Temple led virtually the entire way in set four, holding Fordham to a .000 attack percentage, while Yun Yi Zhang had six kills to lead the Owls to a deciding fifth set.

Set five wasn't any kinder to the Rams, as Temple jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind two kills from Zhang. Fordham inched their way back within two at 9-7 on a block by Jenna Hart and Samantha Jacobson, but Temple closed out the match with six of the next nine points to win set five, 15-10.

For Fordham, Kailee May led the Fordham attack with 19 kills and 14 digs, while Sara Friede added 12 kills, 11 digs, and a pair of aces. Katie Wells also chipped in 11 kills and five blocks. At the setter spot, Katherine Burrell had a double-double with 29 assists and 15 digs, while Jacobson set career-highs with 22 assists and five blocks.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, October 17th, when they play at La Salle University, beginning at 2:00 PM.
