Pittsburgh, Pa. - It took nearly 94 minutes to decide a winner in the men's soccer match between Fordham and Duquesne, but it was the Rams coming away victorious on sophomore John Niyonsaba's first goal of the season that gave Fordham the 1-0 win.
Fordham is now 5-5-1 (2-0 Atlantic 10) while Duquesne drops to 5-3-3 (0-1-1 Atlantic 10).
The Rams were on the attack early in the match, testing Duquesne goalie Colin Thorp three times in the first 20 minutes with Thorpe coming up with the stop each time. Fordham keeper Ryan Meara also had his work cut out for him, making all three of his first-half saves before the 30 minute mark.
Sophomore Tim Richardson had a few chances to give the Rams a lead three minutes into the second half, but his first shot was block while he second went wide, keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0. Sophomore Matt DesRoches eyed up his first goal of the season, but his two shots in the 60th minute were blocked by the Dukes' defense.
The Rams kept firing at the net, registering 12 shots in the half but could not sneak one by as they headed into their second overtime game of the season.
It didn't take long in the first overtime for Niyonsaba to give the Rams the win when he took a Mike McTigue pass and buried it into the back of the net for the 1-0 win.
The Rams will bring home their four-game unbeaten streak back to Rose Hill as they host the University of Richmond on Friday, October 16, at 7:30 PM.
