In an exciting and physical game, Fordham's Randall Hurst forced overtime with a three-point basket with five seconds left in regulation, but Navy's Cassie Consedine spoiled a hard fought Fordham comeback by scoring three of her 18 points in overtime to give the Mids a 70-66 win over the Rams as the Rose Hill Gym.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 7-8 overall, while Navy improves to 7-8.
Both teams left everything on the floor from the start of the contest, as Navy jumped out to a 10-point lead , 20-10, as Cassie Consedine scored 11 early points. Fordham then scored ten straight points to tie the game at 20, highlighted by three-pointers from Kristina Bell and Annie Zopf. Later in the half, as Navy was up by one, the Mids' Kristin Bowen and Emily Cordle each hit a three in the final two minutes to leave Navy ahead, 35-29 at the break.
Navy would eventually push the lead back to double figures in the second half on a lay-up by K.C. Gordon, giving Navy their largest lead at 11, 46-35. After exchanging three point baskets, Fordham went on a 12-0 run to grab a one-point lead, 50-49 with ten minutes left. Zopf hit two baskets as well as a three-pointer in that stretch, while a lay-up by Randall Hurst gave Fordham the lead. Just two minutes later, Kyara Weekes gave Fordham a three-point lead, 54-51, with a steal and fast break lay-up.
The Rams held that three-point edge until Angela Myers hit a three-pointer with 2:02 left on the clock to tie the game at 58. Consedine then hit a jumper, while Myers hit one of two free throws, giving Navy a three-point lead with 12.1 seconds on the clock. The Rams quickly got down the floor, where Hurst canned a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 61. Navy then turned over the ball, where Fordham's Tiffany Stokes was able to get a half court heave for the win, but missed to the right of the hoop, pushing the game into overtime.
In overtime, Navy scored the first seven points, capped by a three-pointer from Cordle, for a 68-61 lead with 2:47 left. Fordham's Becky Peters then hit a three, followed by a jumper, to close the gap back to two, 68-66, with 45 seconds remaining. The Rams then got the ball back on a turnover, but Zopf's shot with 19 seconds would not fall with Navy getting the rebound. Bowen then hit two free throws for Navy to put the game out of reach for the Rams.
For Fordham, Randall Hurst posted 19 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, while Becky Peters added 18 points and three rebounds. Annie Zopf netted 17 points and two assists with Kyara Weekes finishing the contest with six points, three rebounds, and three steals.
Navy was led by Cassie Consedine's 18 points and eight rebounds, while Emily Cordle added 12 points on four three-pointers of the bench.
The Fordham women's basketball team will now begin conference play on Saturday, January 10th, as the Rams host the Massachusetts Minutewomen at the Rose Hill Gym, beginning at 1:00 PM.
