Volleyball Splits Matches On Day Two of ORU Classic

Tulsa, Okla. - Behind doubles from Sara Friede and Katherine Burrell, the Fordham volleyball posted their fifth straight win with a 3-2 victory over North Texas at the ORU Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The match win was the 300th coaching win for Fordham head coach Pete Volkert. In their second match, the Rams fell to Tulsa by a 3-1 count.

With the split, Fordham is now 6-2 on the season, matching their best start in team history through eight matches, set in 2005.

In their first match of the day, Fordham topped North Texas in five sets, 25-13, 18-25, 25-10, 18-25, and 15-11.

For the second straight day, Fordham got excellent hitting performances from Christi Griffiths and Jolanda Gunning-Snowden. Griffiths tallied 15 kills and a .414 hitting percentage, while Gunning-Snowden had ten kills, three blocks, and a .348 hitting percentage.

The Rams also got stellar contributions from Sara Friede and Katherine Burrell. Friede posted her first career double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, while Burrell recorded her fourth of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs to go with five kills.

In match two, the Rams took set one from Tulsa, but dropped the next three sets to fall in four. Set scores were 19-25, 25-12, 25-14, and 25-16.

Fordham had a rough go offensively, hitting just .066 in the match, as no player hit better than .200. Tulsa also posted 11 team blocks against the Rams.

For Fordham, Burrell recorded her second double-double of the day with 29 assists and 10 digs, while Gunning-Snowden had nine kills and five digs. Friede added seven kills and 11 digs with Megan Arend having a team-high 14 digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Tuesday, September 9th, as they host St. John's University at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gym.
