Bronx, N.Y. - In a highly contested affair, Fordham's Aaron Markowitz scored the lone goal of the game, while Ryan Meara made four saves in net, as the Fordham Rams shut out the Manhattan Jaspers, 1-0 on Wednesday night at Jack Coffey Field in the annual "Battle of the Bronx."

With the win Fordham improves to 2-3-1 overall, while Manhattan drops to 1-4-0.

After a scoreless first half where Fordham out shot Manhattan 9-2, the action picked up as Fordham's Mike McTigue had two opportunities to net the first goal. McTigue let a shot loose in the 54th minute on the right side of the field, which just missed the left post wide. Six minutes later he also pushed a shot high over the crossbar.

Manhattan then threatened to score, as their leading scorer Fernando Londono ripped a shot just left of the goal in the 67th minute.

The game was scoreless into the 76th minute, where Fordham broke the deadlock. Abe Chehebar was able to collect a Manhattan goal kick. He then broke away from the Manhattan defense and slid a pass to Aaron Markowitz on the left side of the box. Markowitz then drill a shot from 15 yards into the net for his second goal of the season.

The Rams' defense then locked down the Jaspers' attack, as they limited Manhattan to seven shots on the evening. In net, Ryan Meara made four saves for his second shutout of the season, while John Ciano made six saves for Manhattan.

The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 20th, when they play at Marist College, beginning at 7:00 PM.
