Bronx, N.Y. - Villanova's Sean Mergenthal scored in the 109th minute off a scramble in front of the Fordham net, giving the Wildcats at 1-0 double overtime victory over the Fordham Rams on Saturday night at Jack Coffey Field.

With the win, Villanova improves to 3-2-0 on the year, while Fordham falls to 1-3-1.

Fordham had a number of chances in the first half, with the best coming in the fourth minute, as Abe Chehebar's shot got past the Villanova goalkeeper, but was cleared away by a defender before it crossed the goal line.

Villanova goalkeeper Chris Bresnahan would hold the Fordham attack off, making four saves in the first half, as the teams went into the half scoreless.

Fordham again came close to netting the first goal of the game in the second half. Off a set play, John Pardini flicked on a header which just went over the crossbar, leaving the game scoreless.

The game eventually headed into overtime, where in the 109th minute, Villanova's Michael Seamon took a corner kick, where the ball found its way into the Fordham box. After a frantic scramble to clear the ball, Villanova's Sean Mergenthal was able to collect the ball and score on a shot to the left side of the net.

In net, Villanova's Chris Bresnahan made five saves, while Fordham's Ryan Meara made three saves.

The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Wednesday, September 17th, as they host Manhattan College at 7:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
