Drexel's Fabio Assumpcao scored in the 100th minute of overtime, as the Dragons topped the Fordham Rams, 3-2, at the Loyola Black & Decker Soccer Classic in Baltimore, Maryland. With the loss, Fordham falls to 0-2-0, while Loyola improves to 2-0-0.
The game started out great for Fordham, as Steve Woicik scored his first goal of the season in the 17th minute off assists from John Pardini and Grant Kerr. Kerr took a free kick to Pardini, who then got it to Woicik for the shot from the top of the box.
The Rams had a chance to go up 2-0, as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 25th minute. Drexel goalkeeper Cory Robertson though stopped Pardini's penalty kick attempt, keeping the Fordham lead at one.
Drexel knotted the game at one in the 40th minute, as Carlos Ruthner beat Fordham goalkeeper Ryan Meara with a soft shot to the left corner on a through pass from Cole Feffer.
Drexel kept their momentum going in the second half, as they grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute on a goal by Nate Baker. Baker took a one-touch shot, beating Meara to the lower right corner.
Fordham kept on fighting the Dragons, getting the equalizer in the 84th minute, as Aaron Markowitz netted his first career goal on a shot from ten yards, off an assist from Patrick Murray.
The game then went into overtime, where in the 100th minute, Drexel got the game-winning goal from Fabio Assumpcao on a shot from 20+ yards out into the upper right corner.
In net, Drexel's Cory Robertson made four saves, while Ryan Meara had one for Fordham. Following the tournament, Fordham freshmen Tim Richardson and Markowitz were named to the All-Classic team.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, September 5th, when they host the University of Delaware at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 7:00 PM.
