Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham's Katie McDermott scored in the 33rd minute, while Jen Byer made two saves, as the Fordham women's soccer team opened their 2008 season with a 1-0 victory over the Iona Gaels at Jack Coffey Field.

Fordham (1-0-0) was in control from the start, registering 14 shots on the afternoon, compared to just two for Iona, who drops to 0-3-0 on the season.

The lone goal of the contest came at the 32:41 mark of the first half. Brittany Hogan collected the ball at the Iona endline, passing the ball out to Courtney Fedge. Fedge then lobbed a cross into the box, allowing McDermott to knock it home for a 1-0 Fordham lead.

Byer and the Fordham defense were able to keep Iona' chances to a minimum in the game, as their lone shots were from a distance. For Byer, it was her fifth career shutout.

The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, September 5th, as they play at Syracuse University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
